This past week was a busy one in the Indian automotive world. We saw fresh updates across all segments—SUVs, sedans, EVs, and even safety ratings. From Mahindra teasing the plush cabin of the upcoming XUV 7XO to Tata Motors revealing its electric roadmap and launching petrol-powered Harrier and Safari, the momentum isn’t slowing down.
Renault also gave us the first look at the India-spec Duster, while Maruti Suzuki faced the heat of crash tests with the Ciaz and Celerio. Let’s quickly run through the top highlights of the week.
Harrier
Tata has finally unveiled the petrol versions of the Harrier and Safari. These variants are powered by a brand-new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 168bhp and 280Nm of torque. Buyers will get the option of a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic with torque converter tech.
But it’s not just about the engine. Tata has added several premium features to both SUVs. There’s a massive 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Dolby Atmos audio, digital IRVM, and powered ORVMs with memory and auto-dip function. Also onboard are improved Level 2 ADAS features, 65W USB-C charging ports, and cameras with washer functionality at both ends. Prices are expected soon.
XUV 7XO
Mahindra continued to build the hype for the XUV 7XO by releasing a fresh teaser showing its interior. And it looks like Mahindra is stepping up big time. Inspired by the XUV.e9 concept, the cabin will boast a triple-screen layout—infotainment, driver display, and a co-passenger entertainment screen.
Other confirmed features include the latest Adrenox+ system, rear entertainment screens, an electric boss mode for the co-driver seat, and a redesigned two-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Mahindra logo. Expect premium additions like rear sun blinds, powered tailgate, and cooled, sliding rear seats to round off the experience.
Duster
The Duster is making a comeback. Renault has officially teased the India-spec version ahead of its 26 January unveiling. The teaser reveals a connected tail lamp setup and a unique LED DRL signature, details that weren’t seen on the global versions under the Dacia badge.
This strongly suggests that the Indian model will get market-specific design tweaks. It also signals Renault’s renewed focus on the compact SUV segment, which has gotten more competitive than ever.
EVs
Tata laid out its EV game plan for 2026, and it’s looking promising. Three electric vehicles are confirmed:
- Sierra EV – a long-anticipated revival in electric form
- Punch EV facelift – an update to the recently launched Punch EV
- Avinya – a brand-new premium EV sub-brand
Tata has confirmed that the first Avinya model will launch by end-2026. This marks the beginning of a more global and tech-focused approach for Tata in the EV space.
NCAP
Safety took center stage as Global NCAP released its latest crash test results for Maruti Suzuki cars. The Ciaz and Celerio were under the scanner.
The Celerio, in its basic two-airbag version, received two stars for adult occupant protection and just one for child safety. The six-airbag variant improved the score slightly, achieving three stars for adults and two for children.
Meanwhile, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz scored 20.86 out of 34 in the adult safety test and 28.57 out of 49 in the child protection rating. While not the worst, these results highlight the need for improved structural safety and equipment in budget-friendly models.
