Sonam Wangchuk, an engineer-innovator who is currently on a five day climate fast from 26 January in Ladakh said that he is under house arrest and the UT administration has restricted his fast to HAIL campus.
He earlier said that he would sit on a five-day Climate Fast at Khardungla pass which is 18,000 ft where the temperature is -40°C. He said that the authorities have denied him to go to Khardungla pass citing a threat to his life, though he claimed it is not the only reason.
Concerned over the rapid melting of glaciers and other climate catastrophes, the innovator has decided to go on a fast urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure the safety and protection of Ladakh as studies suggested the extinction of nearly 2/3rd of the glaciers in the Union Territory.
Wangchuk said that if the carelessness continued and Ladakh refrained from being provided protection from the industries, the glaciers here would become extinct, thus creating enormous problems due to water scarcity in India and its neighbourhood.
