Danish Siddiqui: The Journalist who won Pulitzer Prize for Covid coverage in India

Journalist Danish Siddiqui, has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize 2022 for feature photography for the second time for his coverage of the Covid19 pandemic situation in India. 

In 2018, he became the first Indian alongside Adnan Abidi to win the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography as part of a group of photographers, for documenting the Rohingya refugee crisis.

Siddiqui was working for Reuters, based in India as the Chief Photographer. 

Siddiqui’s father was the dean of the Faculty of Education at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI). Siddiqui grew up in the neighbourhood of the university, and attended the Fr. Agnel School, New Delhi. He graduated with a degree in Economics from JMI before pursuing post-graduation in Mass Communication from the A.J.K. Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia in 2007.

Siddiqui started his career as a correspondent for the Hindustan Times before shifting to the TV Today Network. He switched to photojournalism and joined Reuters as an intern in 2010. 

Danish Siddiqui as a photojournalist had covered several issues across the world. Some of his works include the Afghanistan War (2012) , Battle of Mosul (2016–2017), the April 2015 Nepal earthquake, the 2015 Rohingya refugee crisis, the 2019–2020 Hong Kong protests, the 2020 Delhi riots, and the COVID-19 pandemic among other stories in South Asia, Middle East and Europe.

In July 2021, he was serving as an embedded journalist with the Afghan Special Forces to document the Taliban offensive. It was there that he lost his life while covering a clash between Afghan security forces and Taliban forces in Spin Boldak, near the Pakistan border.

The late photojournalist is survived by his two children and wife, a German national.

It is to be mentioned that the Pulitzer Prize is given for achievements in online journalism, literature, magazine, newspaper and musical composition within the United States.

It was in 1917 that it was established by provisions in the will of Joseph Pulitzer, who had made his fortune as a newspaper publisher, and is administered by Columbia University.
