Five people were arrested in Assam’s Barpeta district on Saturday, including a Bangladeshi national, for alleged ties to a jihadi group based in the neighbouring country that is believed to be affiliated with Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).
Meanwhile, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, Assam’s director general of police, told reporters that five people were arrested in Howly, Barpeta, and Kalgachia in western Assam on Friday night based on an intelligence report shared by the state police’s special branch.
Moreover, the DGP added that documents and electronic devices were recovered from their possession.
“During preliminary enquiry conducted so far, it has been found that Saiful Islam alias Harun Rashid alias Mohammad Suman, who is a citizen of Bangladesh having illegally entered India was working as a teacher of Dhakaliapara Masjid in Barpeta district. Islam had successfully indoctrinated and motivated four others to join the module of the Ansarullah Bangla Team with a view to developing Barpeta district as a base for Jihadi work and unlawful activities of Al-Qaeda and its related organization,” Mahanta said.
In addition, he claimed that their personal digital devices, such as cellphones, had been seized for further investigation, and that digital evidence about their previous activities and plans in the state had been discovered. “They wanted to expand the network by indoctrinating more people,” he said.
Saiful is a resident of Araihazar village in Narayanganj district in Bangladesh. The four others have been identified as Khairul Islam, 27 of Balapathar village in Kalgachia, Badshah Suleiman Khan, 28, Naushad Ali, both hailing from Kharbali village in Kalgachia and Taimur Rajman Khan, a resident of Dhakaliapara villagain Howly.
Moreover, Bangladesh shares a 263-kilometre border with Assam.
Some “incriminating” documents have been seized from their possession, according to Mahanta. However, no arms have been discovered from them.
