Himanta Biswa Sarma attends ‘Closed-door meeting’ with CM Neiphu Rio

Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attended a ‘closed-door meeting’ held at the official residence of Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio in Kohima. The meeting has triggered various speculations about the possibility of his role in ‘brokering peace’ in insurgency-ravaged Nagaland.

However, Himanta Biswa Sarma described the ‘closed-door meeting’ as a courtesy call and claimed there were no serious discussions. Although, the officials at the Chief Minister’s office in Nagaland have confirmed about the ‘closed-door meeting’, the agenda of the discussion has not been made public.

People in Nagaland’s political domain have started to speculate about the possibility of his involvement in the Naga peace process and are of the opinion that Sarma’s visit to Nagaland was a follow up of the MHA’s initiative. Sources said that the Ministry is keen to settle the Naga issue within the month of December and would like to portray it as the ‘Christmas Gift’ to the people of Nagaland.
