Indian Men’s table tennis team wins gold at Commonwealth Games

India won a gold medal in the Table Tennis Men’s Team event after beating Singapore 3-1 in the final at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Achanta Sharath Kamal loses for the first time in the tournament but Harmeet Desai & G Sathiyan first partner to win doubles and then win their respective singles matches.

It’s the second consecutive CWG Gold medal for India in Men’s Team event after 2018.

The team made it to the finals following a hard-fought 3-0 win against Nigeria in the Semis.

India dominated the group rounds, defeating Barbados, Singapore, and Northern Ireland handily. Then, they thrashed Bangladesh in the quarterfinals and Nigeria in the semifinals.

President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the Indian men’s table tennis team for winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, saying “they have won the heart of the nation”.

“Congratulations to Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Sharath Kamal, Harmeet Desai and Sanil Shetty for winning the historic gold in table tennis at #CWG2022. They showed extraordinary skill and determination,” the President tweeted.

However, India’s women’s team, the defending champions for Gold, was eliminated by Malaysia, the eventual gold medal winners, in the quarterfinals.
