The Congress on Tuesday appointed Mira Borthakur Goswami as president of Mahila Congress in Assam. Her appointment was cleared by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

“Congress president has approved the proposal of the appointment of Mira Borthakur Goswami as the president of Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress, with immediate effect,” an official communication from the party said.

Meanwhile, Mira Borthakur has expressed gratitude towards the central and state leaderships of the Congress party for giving her the responsibility of leading the Mahila Congress unit in Assam.

Assam Congress chief Bhupen Bora said: “Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Smt Mira Borthakur on being appointed as the president of Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress.”

It is to be mentioned that Mira Borthakur had unsuccessfully contested the last assembly elections in Assam from Guwahati west constituency.

A former BJP spokesperson, Borthakur, who was an aspirant for Guwahati East, had joined the Congress on January 19, 2021. She parted ways with the BJP after the Citizenship Amendment Act was enacted in 2019.

She was also offered ticket to contest from Jalukbari against BJP strongman Himanta Biswa Sarma, which she refused to accept because she was unfamiliar with the locals of the constituency. Ramen Chandra Borthakur was offered the Jalukbari ticket instead.

After Borthakur and her supporters expressed displeasure over denial of ticket for Guwahati East, Kaliabor MP and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee manifesto committee chairman Gaurav Gogoi got in touch with Borthakur with the offers and convinced her to contest from Guwahati West against Ramendra Narayan Kalita of the Asom Gana Parishad.
