In an audio call which went viral recently, BJP MLA Pijush Hazarika can be heard threatening two state reporters for airing a news report related to his wife, Aimee Boruah.
In the audio clip, the BJP MLA is heard intimidating reporters named Najrul and Tulsi respectively. He threatened openly with strong words to vanish the journalists and jeopardize their career. He also repeatedly asked to record the conversation in the call and expressed his disappointment on reporting a news where his wife, Aimee boruah had made a controversial statement at a poll meeting a few days ago.
He also warned Nazrul Islam for doing “miya politics” to suppot Congress and AIUDF party in the election and said that the would spoil Nazrul’s life.
The recent phone call has put democracy under serious threat as the minister directly attacked the media, which is called as the fourth pillar of democracy. The contents of the conversation by Hazarika clearly violated the Model Code of Conduct and so, one of the journalists filed a case against him at the Jagiroad police station.
In a viral video, Aimee Boruah, wife of Pijush Hazarika, was seen saying at a meeting that those not accepting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) would be thrown out of the country. The objective of the CAA is to grant Indian citizenship to people of minority communities Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
The Gauhati Press Club (GPC) also condemned the “act of intimidation in the strongest words” and said that it is very unbecoming of a public representative to threaten a journalist of dire consequences.
