Assam Election: FIR lodged against Ajmal for disrespecting Gamocha

After AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal was seen disrespecting the Assamese gamocha in an election rally, the Otijya Suraksha Samiti (OSS) filed an FIR against him on Thursday.

Yesterday, PM Narendra Modi also slammed Ajmal for disrespecting the Gamocha, a symbol of Assam pride and tradition in an election meeting held at Kokrajhar.

In the video, that spread on social media, Ajmal was seen throwing the Assamese gamocha when a well-wisher wanted to felicitate him.

“Today, we have filed an FIR at Tezpur police station against AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal for disrespecting the Assam’s traditional symbol. We demand action against him,” Secretary of Oitijya Suraksha Samiti Nayan Jyoti Kalita said.

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal also posted a tweet sharing the video and said that, “.@BadruddinAjmal threw away Assam’s pride ― Gamosa, in utter contempt. This is @INCIndia‘s & AIUDF’s design to humiliate & disrespect Assam’s culture & heritage. Strongly condemn it. We won’t allow our pride to be tarnished in such a way. People will give a befitting reply.

Similarly, BJP leader and convenor of North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), Himanta Biswa Sarma, also criticised Ajmal for “disrespecting” Assamese identity by throwing the gamocha.
