Two Indian nationals were among three people killed in explosions and fires that followed a suspected drone attack on Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, by Yemen’s Houthi rebels (UAE).
Two Indians and a Pakistani national were killed and six others were injured in a fire that triggered an explosion in three petroleum transport tankers near ADNOC’s storage tanks in Abu Dhabi’s Industrial City, according to state-run Emirates News Agency WAM.
Another fire broke out in the Abu Dhabi International Airport’s new construction area. Both fires had been put out by the afternoon, according to police.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that small flying objects, possibly belonging to drones that fell in the two areas, are the cause of the fires,” WAM reported without going into detail.
According to the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi, UAE authorities informed the Indian side of the deaths of two Indian nationals.
“UAE authorities have confirmed that an explosion near ADNOC’s storage tanks in Mussafah resulted in three casualties, including two Indian nationals. In a tweet, the embassy said, “The Mission @IndembAbuDhabi is in close contact with concerned UAE authorities for further details.”
Yahia Sarei, a spokesman for the Houthi military, said the group had launched an attack deep inside the UAE. He didn’t go into detail, only saying that a statement would be issued.
The storage facility of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), where the three tankers caught fire, is located 1,800 kilometres northeast of Saada, Yemen’s Houthi stronghold.
The attack in Abu Dhabi comes just over a week after Houthi rebels in the Red Sea seized the UAE-flagged vessel Rwabee, which had 11 crew members on board, including seven Indian nationals. On January 11, India and the United Arab Emirates demanded the crew members’ immediate release.
Since Houthi rebels seized the capital Sanaa in 2014, Yemen has seen intense fighting. The United Arab Emirates is a member of the Saudi-led coalition that intervened in 2015 to support the government.
The coalition has launched attacks against the Houthi rebels, who are backed by Iran. Despite the fact that the UAE has fewer troops on the ground, it continues to support militias fighting the Houthis and works with the US to combat terrorism in Yemen.
