According to the government’s Treasury Board, an attack on Canada’s Global Affairs Department’s computer systems last week has left at least some diplomats without access to some online functions. In the midst of tensins with Russia Canada investigating the cyber attack.

“Access to a very limited number of internet-based services remains restricted as part of the mitigation measures,” the board said Tuesday. It didn’t say who was behind the attack on Jan. 19 or provide any details about what happened.

The incident occurred just one day after the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security urged businesses to beef up their defences against Russian-backed attacks as tensions over a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine escalated.

The board stated, “Every day, the Government of Canada deals with ongoing and persistent cyber risks and threats.” “Cyberthreats can arise as a result of system or application vulnerabilities, or as a result of deliberate, persistent, and targeted attacks on information by outside actors.”

Moscow is currently locked in a military standoff with NATO, which includes Canada, over Russia’s military buildup on the Ukrainian border. Ukraine claimed on Jan. 16 that Russia was behind an attack on its websites, which Russia denied.

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced that destructive malware disguised as ransomware had infected dozens of computer systems at an unspecified number of Ukrainian government agencies.
