Rare case of avian flu in human discovered in United Kingdom

Rare case

As the country battles its largest-ever outbreak of the virus among birds, health officials in Britain announced Thursday that they had identified a rare case of avian flu in a person.

Avian flu transmission from bird to human is extremely rare and has only happened a few times in the UK, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

The infected person was said to be “well” and self-isolating in southwest England, according to the report.

The infection was acquired from “very close, regular contact with a large number of infected birds, which they kept in and around their home for a long period of time,” according to a statement from the UKHSA.

“All of the individual’s contacts, including those who visited the premises, have been tracked down, and there is no evidence of the infection spreading to others.”

The avian flu threat to the general public is still “very low,” according to the CDC, but people should avoid touching sick or dead birds.

In 2021, Britain culled around half a million birds as it battled the country’s “largest-ever” avian flu outbreak, according to Environment Secretary George Eustice.

Along with culling, the government issued new rules in December requiring keepers to keep all captive birds indoors and adhere to strict biosecurity protocols in order to prevent the virus from spreading.

Officials, on the other hand, are concerned that wild birds migrating from mainland Europe during the winter months may carry the disease.

Wild bird species that have been affected include geese, ducks, and swans, as well as a number of birds of prey that have died.
