South Africa prepared to live with Covid; no plans to impose quarantine or lockdown

South Africa has stated that it is prepared to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic and will not impose quarantine or lockdown measures. According to a report by PTI, the government has decided to take a more pragmatic approach while keeping an eye on severe Covid and whether health systems are in danger.

South African medical experts stated on January 9 that restrictions on the economy, livelihoods, and other aspects of society have indirect but harmful consequences.

They argue that the government should not blindly follow global Covid-19 restrictions that are impossible to implement locally and provide only marginal benefits.

South Africa has recorded over 3.5 million coronavirus cases to date, with 93,278 deaths, 3,360,879 discharges, and 102,476 active cases.

The country is currently experiencing the fourth wave of the pandemic, which was sparked by the Omicron variant’s discovery in November of last year.

The government’s new approach contrasts sharply with its previous response of imposing higher levels of restrictions as the number of Covid-19 cases increased.

This suggests that the government listened to public feedback and decided to focus on whether health facilities are in imminent danger rather than simply increasing lockdown levels, according to experts.

They added that a serosurvey conducted before the emergence of the Omicron variant in South Africa revealed that immunity to severe Covid evolved largely through natural infection during the first three waves and prior to the introduction of vaccination.

T cell immunity is also “relatively unaffected” by Omicron, according to medical experts, which reduces the risk of severe disease.

However, given the country’s low Covid-19 testing figures, the government must take steps such as ensuring higher vaccine uptake, including booster doses for high-risk groups, and a more pragmatic approach to isolation.

Experts also believe that non-pharmacological interventions can be gradually reduced. Hand hygiene as a token gesture and superficial thermal screening should be abandoned.

They stated that there is little reason why events such as attendance at outdoor sporting events should be prohibited.

Instead, the government should concentrate on interventions such as masking and adequate ventilation in poorly ventilated indoor spaces.
