Suicide attack in Iraq’s Sadr City kills at least 35, injured dozens

According to security and hospital reports, a suicide bomber killed at least 35 people and injured scores more at a packed market in Baghdad’s Sadr City neighbourhood on Monday, the eve of the Eid al-Adha festival.

According to a police source, at than 60 persons were injured. On Telegram, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, according to the group’s Nasheer news agency. It claimed that one of its militants detonated his explosive vest in the midst of the people. The death toll could grow, according – hospital authorities, because some of the injured were in severe condition. Mustafa al-Kadhimi, the prime minister, convened an emergency conference with top security commanders to examine the attack and the premier’s response.
