Taliban plans to enlist suicide bombers in military

Since forming government in Afghanistan four months ago, the Taliban will officially recruit suicide bombers to join the army as the militant group tries to contain its biggest security threat from rival Islamic State.

The Taliban used suicide bombers as a key weapon to attack and defeat US and Afghan troops in the 20-year war before sweeping to power last year.

According to the Taliban’s deputy spokesman Bilal Karimi, the group now wants to reform and organise the scattered squads of suicide bombers across the country into a single unit that will protect Afghanistan.

Their main target now would be a local branch of the Islamic State, which has carried out at least five major attacks since the US withdrew from Afghanistan in August, as the Taliban sought to consolidate power.

Suicide bombers were involved in several of the attacks. “Martyrdom-seeking special forces will be used for more sophisticated and special operations,” Karimi said.

Meanwhile, amid escalating tensions between the neighbouring countries over the contentious issue of border fencing, the Taliban regime has stated that it will not allow Pakistan to fence along the Durand Line, according to a media report.

“We (the Taliban) will not allow fencing in any form at any time.” They (Pakistan) did whatever they wanted before, but we will not allow it now. “There will be no fencing anymore,” Taliban commander Mawllawi Sanaullah Sangin told Afghanistan’s Tolo News on Wednesday.
