US diplomat Atul Keshap named as head of US-India Business Council

Atul Keshap, a former US diplomat who served as Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in New Delhi, has been named president of the US-India Business Council (USIBC), according to the US Chambers of Commerce.

Keshap is a career diplomat who served in the US foreign service for more than 28 years and held a variety of positions, including ambassador to Sri Lanka.

Nisha Biswal will stay on as the US Chamber of Commerce’s senior vice president of international strategy and global initiatives for South Asia. When Biswal was assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asia, Keshap was one of Biswal’s deputies at the State Department.

“We are overjoyed to have Ambassador Keshap as the next President of the USIBC.” His vast experience and global network will propel the organisation to new heights and provide excellent service to our members.” In a press release announcing the new appointment, Myron Brilliant, executive vice-president and head of the US Chamber of Commerce’s international division, said:

“I’m honoured and excited to continue my involvement in shaping and strengthening the robust relationship between the United States and India as the next president of USIBC,” Keshap said. I’m ecstatic to be joining the US Chamber of Commerce’s international powerhouse team and to be a part of the world’s largest and most powerful advocacy organisation.”

“I’m thrilled to welcome my former State Department colleague to the US Chamber family,” Biswal said.

Keshap arrived in India in the middle of 2021. He was in India for the second time, the first being from 2005 to 2008. In Washington, DC, he was also the principal deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, the United States envoy for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, and the deputy assistant secretary of state for South Asia. He was also a member of the White House National Security Council and the National Defense University.
