Arunachal: ANYA defers 48-hour Capital shutdown; DA releases 21 members

All Nyishi Youth Association

The All Nyishi Youth Association (ANYA) has postponed its proposed 48-hour Capital bandh until January 18 after the district administration released 21 of its members who had been detained by police on Monday.

ANYA president Byabang Joram declared the bandh on Saturday, after several members of the organisation, including its general secretary and vice president, were detained by police during and after the organization’s 36-hour bandh on January 12-14.

Speaking to reporters, Joram stated that “the bandh has only been deferred and not called off and the association’s movement against the state government would continue.”

“We are deferring tomorrow’s bandh because many of our members are yet to be released and the deputy commissioner has assured us that they will be done so by tomorrow. We understand that this process takes time hence we are deferring the 48-hour bandh for now,” he said.

Joram stated that the executive members of the association will hold a meeting soon to decide the next steps in their movement.

He also denied any political involvement or the agitation being a communal one, claiming that their movement was for the benefit of the entire state’s public, not for themselves or a specific community.

In response to the state police’s claims that goons and anti-social elements were hired from outside to create law and order problems in the capital region during the 36-hour capital bandh, Joram stated that he had no knowledge of it.

“I have never or shall ever encourage such things. I am an Arunachalee and I would never want an outsider to destroy my state. If you still have any doubts, I and my team are open to an investigation,” he said.

Instead, Joram suggested that the police turn over those arrested with arms and weapons during the bandh to his organisation so that they can be prosecuted.

ANYA had imposed a 36-hour bandh in the ICR from January 12-14, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Pema Khandu and alleging several corruption charges against him.

Itanagar, the state capital, Naharlagun, Nirjuli, and Banderdewa are all part of the ICR. The union has also levelled several other allegations against the chief minister, which the state government has dismissed as “baseless.”
