With the aim to strengthen a sense of bonhomie with the local populace of the district, the Longding battalion of Assam Rifles on Saturday distributed six sewing machines and accessories to the needy women folk of Wanu village.
The sewing machines were distributed in the presence of the Kanubari ZPM and the village authority of Wanu. A machine was especially presented to Phehseng Wangjen, the spouse of Rifleman (GD) Rangpha Wangjen of 44 AR.
The Assam Rifles in a communiqué said that the sewing machines would empower the beneficiaries to generate income for their livelihood. Meanwhile, the villagers expressed their gratitude to the battalion for the noble gesture.
On Thursday last the AR distributed 95 solar lanterns to villagers of Longkhao village to illuminate their houses during frequent electricity cuts.
Earlier in the day, the AR also paid homage to Late Rifleman Khampai Wangsu at Pongchau Village. On this day in the year 2017, he made the supreme sacrifice for the nation in the line of duty. He was awarded Sena Medal posthumously for his bravery during an encounter with armed insurgents in Jairampur.
A wreath laying ceremony was also organised at his memorial at Pongchau village to honour the supreme sacrifice of the martyred soldier. His wife was also felicitated on the day with ‘Veer Nari’ title.
The event was graced by the veterans of Pongchao Village.
The villagers and ESM expressed their gratitude towards Assam Rifles for paying tribute to the brave heart on the solemn occasion.
