Candlelight march for Yayik Nilling; Citizens seek Capital punishment

For late Yayik Nilling, a candlelight march was carried out in Upper Subansiri district by around thousand citizens on Thursday. Yayik Nilling was murdered mercilessly on November 27 at Nilling village.

The All Nilling Youth Association leaded the candlelight march which was joined by the Upper Subansiri unit of the women welfare society, the All Upper Subansiri District Students’ Union, the All Tagin Students’ Union and the All Tagin Youth Organization, besides several women and school students.

The citizens demanded capital punishment for the culprit terming the murder as a barbaric act.

The betterment of law and order in the district was sought by the citizens.

The law enforcing authority was appealed by the husband of the deceased to, “award capital punishment to the culprit or hand him over to the aggrieved family to be dealt with as per the Tagin customary law.”

While trying to defend herself from the sexual assaulter Babul Noroh (20) from Laluk, Assam, Late Nilling was killed on November 27.

“Her chest was pierced with a spear and her neck had cut marks from a machete (dao),” the police had informed then.

During the incident time, the victim’s husband was undergoing medical treatment in Itanagar.
