The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has been accused of gross negligence and environmental law violations, which have resulted in extensive damage to forests, wildlife, and rivers, as well as jeopardising the environment and lives of people in the Dibang Valley (DV) district.
Rakhini Mipi, an environmental activist and long-time resident of DV, has filed a complaint against the NHIDCL over the ongoing road widening project connecting Anini and Roing (Lower Dibang Valley district), which is part of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ Special Accelerated Road Development Programme in the North East (SARDP-NE).
According to the Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules – 2016 and the environment law, it is a pre-requisite norm for any construction authority in any given area to dispose of their construction and demolition (C&D) waste in a specific area that is far away from forests and other prohibited areas, according to Mipi.
