On Monday, a ‘anti-drugs action committee’ under the ‘Nasha Mukt Lotong’ campaign destroyed around eight hectares of illegal poppy (opium) fields in New Jaipur, Dadum Jona, and Jona-II villages in Lathao circle, continuing the fight against drug menace in Namsai district.
Earlier this month, the Namsai units of the Adi Ba:ne Kebang, the Bogum Bokang Kcopy;bang, the Adi Students’ Union, and the ABK Youth Wing, along with GBs, panchayat members, and members of the All Jaipur Area Women Association for Nasha Mukt Lotong, resolved in a joint consultative meeting to implement customary and traditional laws to combat drug abuse.
The anti-drugs action committee was formed to raise awareness and control drug abuse in the Lotong Adi Banggo district of Namsai. Members also agreed to set up a temporary de-addiction camp in Jaipur village.
Lotong Adi Banggo Kebang (LABK) urged the district administration to “immediately take strong action and deploy sufficient manpower to identify and destroy all illegal poppy plantation fields in Namsai district before they are harvested.”
“This is a clarion call to all NGOs, CBOs, and society to come forward and fight collectively to curb drug menace in the district,” the LABK said, adding that the anti-opium operation will also take place in other Adi-inhabited villages in the district.
