On Thursday, the Tirap district sessions court convicted three people, sentenced them to life in prison, and ordered them to pay a fine for the crime of abduction for ransom.

Suraj Chakma (alias Bakksu Chakma alias Subhash Moni Chakma), Prem Chakma (alias Sikko Chakma alias Garbhenga Chakma), and Chitiso Chakma were convicted under Indian Penal Code Sections 364 A and 365.

When storekeeper Ashim Deb and supervisor Indeswar Taye of the Namchic Tea Estate were returning home on September 20, 2017, miscreants brandishing daos and guns stopped them.

After inquiring about their work descriptions, they were escorted to a tea garden. Ashim Deb was eventually released, but Indeswar Taye was kidnapped by the miscreants.

They kept Taye for 12 days at their jungle camp and used his phone to extort Rs 50 lakhs from the owner of the tea estate.

They also threatened to kill Taye if their demand was not met. Following talks, a ransom of Rs 12,20,000 was agreed upon, and Taye was freed by the miscreants only when the cash was received.

After the ransom was paid and the victim was released, Kharsang Police Station SI L Ganden leapt into action and captured Chitiso Chakma, recovering three dummy AK-47 rifles and one wooden pistol, according to his disclosure.

Two of the miscreants fled to Bangladesh after performing the crime. They were apprehended in 2019 after kidnapping an OIL employee and extorting Rs 30 lakhs. Despite the fact that there were a total of six miscreants engaged, the remainder have fled.

Later, SI Krishan Kumar filed a chargesheet against the defendants. Changlang Chief Judicial Magistrate D Niri referred the case to the Sessions Court in Changlang, and Sessions Judge H Kashyap presided over the trial.
