In an unforeseen natural disaster, a cloudburst wreaked havoc in Arunachal’s West Kameng district on July 21, leaving behind a trail of destruction. The flash flood, caused by the sudden and intense downpour, resulted in significant damage to houses, roads, and other structures, putting the district in a state of emergency. As of the latest reports, no casualties have been reported, but authorities are still evaluating the extent of the damages incurred. The district administration is actively working to assess the situation and provide aid to the affected communities.
The impact of the cloudburst was particularly severe in certain regions, with Rama Camp, Sappar Camp, and Dirang bearing the brunt of the devastation. These areas are reported to have suffered the most significant damage, leaving communities grappling with the aftermath. J.T. Obi, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dirang, shared firsthand accounts of the calamity. According to Obi, at approximately 10.45 pm, flash floods struck Sappar area due to the cloudburst near the Sela range the previous evening. The consequences were dire, with an under-construction tunnel and the link road to the new proposed Mini Secretariat being completely washed away.
The relentless force of the flash floods wreaked havoc on the landscape, causing severe damage to heavy machinery such as JCB and folklands, rendering them useless. Apart from infrastructure destruction, the disaster also inflicted significant harm to the agricultural sector. Crops and agricultural lands bore the brunt of the flash floods, leaving farmers facing substantial losses.
In the face of this catastrophe, the Dirang administration has sprung into action to provide relief to those affected. Dirang MLA Phurpa Tsering led efforts to distribute essential assistance to families caught in the flash floods, extending a helping hand in their time of need.
