Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a groundbreaking decision to upgrade seven state colleges to the esteemed status of universities. This strategic move is aimed at transforming Assam into a prominent educational hub in Eastern India. With the implementation of this plan, the total number of universities in the state will reach an impressive count of 10, a remarkable achievement since 2021.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a recent tweet, expressed his commitment towards elevating Assam’s educational standards. He stated, “In our endeavor to make Assam an educational hub of Eastern India, we are planning to upgrade 7 colleges to university status.” This visionary step marks a significant milestone in the state’s relentless pursuit of academic excellence.
Under this transformative initiative, the following colleges will be granted the prestigious university status:
- JB College in Jorhat
- North Lakhimpur College in Lakhimpur
- Nowgong College in Nagaon
- Sibsagar College in Sivasager
- Gurucharan College in Silchar
- Bongaigaon College in Bongaigaon
The Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has been actively exploring options to upgrade colleges into universities. However, the road to university status has encountered obstacles along the way. Despite the positive strides, the hopes of attaining university status at Handique Girls’ College appear to be a distant dream, primarily due to the scarcity of suitable land.
Addressing the concerns surrounding proposed universities, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified that during the August assembly session, the Government of Assam intends to introduce bills to establish new universities. The planned universities include Sibsagar College, Kokrajhar Government College, Bongaigaon College, JB College in Jorhat, North Lakhimpur College, Nagaon College, and Gurucharan College. These institutions will undergo a transformative journey, becoming beacons of knowledge and higher learning.
The upgradation of Handique College to university status is currently facing a time-consuming process due to inadequate land availability. Recognizing this issue, Assam CM Sarma assured that efforts are underway to secure suitable land for Handique College. The transition to a university requires additional infrastructure and resources to accommodate the educational needs of its students.
Although the announcement of the government’s plans has been widely discussed, Handique Girls’ College awaits official communication from the authorities regarding its upgradation. As of now, the college remains committed to providing quality education to approximately 2,700 students. The anticipation for university status continues, promising a bright future for Handique Girls’ College.
