Commissioner of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Devajyoti Hazarika has been appointed as the General Observer of the Assembly elections in all the five states- Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Hazarika, an Assam-Meghalaya cadre IAS officer, has been appointed as the General Observer for Assembly elections in 5 States under Article 324 of the Constitution of India.

The order of appointment was issued on Wednesday.

As General Observer, Devajyoti Hazarika will have authority to control, supervise and discipline the Election Commission.

Assembly Elections to 5 states – Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puduchery and Kerala are slated to be held from March 27.

Counting of votes for all the five states would be held on May 2.
