Assam : AASU Ex-leader to join Assam Jatiya Parishad party

During a two-day political gathering at Sivasagar from December 16, former All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) General Secretary, Lurinjyoti Gogoi stated that he has decided to join the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP).

Lurinjyoti said speaking to media, “The decision to take the political route has been taken after consultations with the students’ union, educationists, intellectuals and a cross-section of people and well-wishers”.

“From the platform of an apolitical organization, I have been raising issues at the state and political levels, pressing for the socio-political security of the greater Assamese community. However, none of the issues has been addressed. Absence of political foresightedness by the national parties has adversely affected regionalism and therefore an alternative—a united regional political force is imperative,” he said.

“I feel this is the time for me to join politics and lay a strong foundation for regionalism in the coming days so that the future of the indigenous people of the state is secure”, he added.

On December 16, the AJP core committee will be constituted, and on December 17 the party’s first state executive meeting will be held. The constitution of the party will also be placed during the two-day convention.

During the recently held 17th general convention of AASU in Duliajan, the former AASU leader had stepped down as the union’s general secretary.

AJP was floated by anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) movement, the AASU and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) in September last year.
