At a simple function held at the Chief Minister’s Office in Janata Bhawan in Guwahati on Saturday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma handed over appointment letters to the next of kin of those who died in the Nimatighat ferry capsize incident in the Brahmaputra.
The ill-fated ferry was carrying passengers to Majuli when it was involved in an accident at Nimatighat on September 8, 2021. 89 passengers were rescued, but three people died: Parimita Das, Indreswar Bora, and Dr. Bikramjit Baruah. Following the incident, the State Cabinet met on December 10 and decided to give government jobs to the relatives of those killed in the accident.
Madhumita Das, Parimaita Das’s sister, and Ruprekha Bora Senapati, Indreswar Bora’s widow, received appointment letters from Chief Minister Sarma. Madhumita Das has been hired as an Assistant Professor at SCERT, while Ruprekha Bora Senapati has been hired as a Grade IV teacher in a school in her hometown. Despite the fact that Dr. Bikramjit Baruah was the third victim of the capsize, because he worked as a physician in a government hospital, his family would continue to receive his full salary until the deceased’s superannuation.
During his brief appearance on the programme, Chief Minister Sarma stated that his government has decided to provide government jobs to eligible family members of the deceased as a gesture of empathy and sensibility toward the loss of human lives. He also requested that the Education Department collaborate with the Finance Department to ensure that the appointees receive their first salary on time, without having to approach any department. In regards to Bikramjit Baruah, the Chief Minister stated that in addition to regular salaries, if his family requires financial assistance at any time, the government will assist them.
Chief Minister Sarma reaffirmed his government’s commitment to provide jobs to the next of kin of those who died as a result of extraordinary circumstances, adding that his government was also committed to providing jobs to the family members of the men in uniform who died while protecting the state along the Assam-Mizoram interstate border. Chief Minister Sarma wished the appointees well and remembered those who had passed away.
According to a press release, the event was attended by Chief Minister’s Political Secretary Jayanta Malla Baruah, Education Adviser to the Assam Government Nani Gopal Mahanta, and others.
