The Asom Sattra Mahasabha one of Assam’s largest religious organisations aimed at preserving and promoting the Neo-Vaishnavite faith among citizens has strongly opposed the “give-and-take” policy implemented by the Assam and Meghalaya governments to resolve the two northeastern states’ long-pending boundary disputes, and has threatened to approach the Gauhati High Court (HC) to seek withdrawal of the deal. It has also threatened to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
According to the umbrella organisation for Vaishnavite monasteries in Assam, two’satras’ and over 20 ‘naamghars’ (prayer houses) in Assam will be handed over to Meghalaya as part of the land-swap agreement reached between Assam and Meghalaya to resolve border disputes.
Recently, both northeastern state governments identified natural boundaries such as rivers and forests, agreeing to share 36.79 square kilometres encompassing 36 villages along the six points of difference – a recommendation that has already been submitted to Union Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation, Amit Shah. If the Centre approves the recommendation, the Vaishnavite Centres will be handed over to Meghalaya, a northeastern state with a sizable Christian population.
It is worth noting that the governments of Assam and Meghalaya formed three regional committees each to resolve border disputes, led by Cabinet ministers and officials from the two northeastern states. These committees were tasked with focusing on five factors: historical facts, ethnicity, administrative convenience, land contiguity, willingness, and people’s sentiments.
Based on this, regional committees were tasked with making joint visits to “areas of differences” along the inter-state border, interacting with all stakeholders and village heads, recording their perspectives, and finally submitting their reports.
In the first phase, six disputed locations – Tarabari, Gizang, Hahim, Baklapara, Khanapara (Pilingkata), and Ratacherra – were mutually studied. These areas are located in the Assam districts of Cachar, Kamrup, and Kamrup Metropolitan, as well as the Meghalaya districts of West Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, and East Jaintia Hills.
