Bail has been granted to Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal president, Akhil Gogoi in one of the two cases filed against him by a National Investigation Agency (NIA) court on June 22(Tuesday).

The 45 year old activist was involved in the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in Assam back in December 2019 due to which cases were filed against him under several sections of the IPC and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act (UAPA) by NIA.

The court declared him guilty free in the case registered against him at Chabua police station for leading the anti-CAA protesters and pelting stones at police personnel.

“Hearing in the other case registered at Chandmari police station is still on,” informed Gogoi’s advocate. The verdict of the pending case would be out soon, the advocate further informed.

The cases are connected to criminal conspiracy, sedition, promoting enmity between groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc, assertions against national integrity and support to terrorist organizations, etc.

“The Chabua police station case hearing is over and an order has been released regarding the same. The NIA court has discharged Akhil Gogoi, Jagajit Gohain, Bhupen Gogoi while the charges have been framed against Bhaskarjyoti Phukan,” Gogoi’s advocate, Krishna Gogoi, said.

Akhil Gogoi was brought to the NIA court from Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where he is under medical treatment. He was in Jail since December 2019.
