A meeting was held at Semson Sing Ingti Memorial Park by the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC), Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) and Karbi Nimso Chingthur Asong (KNCA), on Friday..
Demanding an immediate formation of an autonomous state under Article 244 (A) of the Constitution a memorandum was presented to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah through the Deputy Commissioner of Karbi Anglong by the organizations. Among other demands includes adding the three hill districts of Assam namely Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao under the autonomous state.
The ASDC stated in its memorandum, “The process of reorganization of Assam undertaken in 1969 during the creation of the then autonomous state of Meghalaya was left incomplete as Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao were only given an option requiring both the councils in each session to adopt a resolution in favor of Autonomous State. The resolution in favor of an autonomous state in the council session for Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao was frustrated by the Congress, which was then the ruling party. Again in 1971, the whole North-East India was reorganized, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao were again left out of the process. Therefore, it is necessary to complete the process of reorganization of Assam by implementing Article 244 (A) of the constitution to create an autonomous state for Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao as it is a commitment given by the Indian parliament to the people of this land”.
Chandra Kanta Terang the ASDC president said, “It has been 30 years the ASDC and its allies KSA and KNCA have been demanding for the creation of Autonomous State under Article 244 (A) of Indian Constitution. But successive governments ruled by Congress and BJP have only given assurance, but they are not serious in it” .
“The ASDC is also demanding the full implementation of MoU, MoS and to hold peace talks with KLNLF and other armed outfits, who are in a ceasefire,” Terang added.
