Assam : Supply of duplicate pacemaker at GMCH; police arrests four

Four persons were arrested by the Guwahati police for allegedly having links with supply of fake pacemaker devices to a pharmacy inside Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) premises.

Guwahati Commissioner of police, Munna Prasad informed that the Bhangagarh police busted the racket after receiving a complaint filed by the GMCH management on June 12, 2021.

One duplicate pacemaker device was recovered at the operation theatre by doctors at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), on June 12.

According to reports, the cardiac patient attendant had purchased the pacemaker from a medical shop by the ‘Radali drugs’.

Principal of GMCH Dr. Achyut Baishya earlier said, “The matter came to light after Dr. Pranab Bhattacharya claimed it to be a fake pacemaker while operating a cardiac patient at the GMCH. We demand strict action against the culprits.”

The proprietor of the Radali drugs inside the premises of GMCH informed the media, “We bought the product from our distributor. Our manager has already visited the distributor along with the bill. We are not involved in any act of duplicity. The product was procured from the distributor and accordingly, we sold it to the patient’s attendant.
