Duliajan, Jan 4 (UNI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday appealed to the banned insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) not to call for customary bandh on the Republic Day, January 26.
“I request that ULFA-I refrain from calling a bandh on Republic Day. They didn’t call a bandh on Independence Day (August 15), and I urge them not to do so on Republic Day as well,” said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
In regards to the proposed peace talks with the outfit, CM Sarma stated that there has been a lot of “positive development.”
Meanwhile, in response to the pro-talks ULFA expressing doubts about the Centre’s’sincerity’ in the peace talks with the group, the Assam chief minister urged the Centre to complete the talks with the group.
“I strongly urge the Centre to complete negotiations with the pro-talks ULFA. “Negotiations with both groups can take place at the same time,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
Sarma had previously stated that the ULFA-Independent, led by Paresh Baruah, has expressed keen interest in peace talks.
“The ULFA-demand I’s for sovereignty is the only stumbling block in the government’s peace talks with the ULFA-I,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said.
“I dare to say that this is the beginning of the end,” he added. We hope to reach an agreement with the ULFA-I in a peaceful manner.”
Earlier, Sarma had said that while the ULFA-I remained the “last hurdle” in achieving peace in Assam, efforts with the outfit in the last eight months marked the “beginning of the end”.
“The era of tribal insurgency is over. All militant groups have come forward… our last hurdle is the ULFA-I,” Sarma had said while addressing a press conference on the occasion of the New.
