Both Assamese and Bengali literature have benefited from the publication of two Bengali translation books of well-known Assamese novels.

Dr. Anamika Ray Memorial Trust (ARMT) held a book release function for two Bengali translation books, ‘Ashime Jaar Haralo Seema’ and ‘1962’, at the Assam Book Fair 2021-22 on Sunday at the Assam Engineering Playground in Guwahati.

Dr. Anamika Ray, who was an aspiring academician at the time, translated the books. Despite her origins in Shantiniketan, West Bengal, she quickly mastered the Assamese language with zeal and dedication.

As a result, she began translating Assamese literature. Cotton College, Gauhati University, and Sikkim Central University were all places where she taught.

“There is no doubt that the translation of Kanchan Baruah’s famous Assamese novel into Bengali is a rich contribution to both Assamese and Bengali readers,” said Professor Amalendu Chakrabarty, Founder Vice-Chancellor of Rabindranath Tagore University, when formally releasing the book “Ashime Jaar Haralo Seema.”

“It is just as important to Bengali novelists as it is to Assamese novelists.” “The translation will pique the interest of both Assamese and Bengali academics interested in conducting further research on this all-time great novel,” he said.

Dr. Anamika Ray, the translator-writer, will live on in the hearts and minds of the readers and her loved ones forever, according to Chakrabarty.

“It’s no coincidence that the title of this novel and the translator’s brief life have the same meaning of reaching infinity’s limits.” “Anamika must go beyond life to bring the presence of her creations into our hands,” Chakrabarty said.

While Brigadier (Rtd) Ranjit Barthakur emphasised the importance of translating Mrinal Talukdar’s ‘1962’ war history, as there are few books on the 1962 Indo-China war that have been translated into Assamese.

“We didn’t want to discuss 1962 because we had been defeated in the war.” However, despite the collective loss for failures on many fronts, including political, military, and intelligence levels, there were many incidents that demonstrated their brave and commendable roles,” said Barthakur, who was the former Chairman of the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC).

The translation of this war history, according to Barthakur, is another attempt to penetrate information – both successful and failures, as well as the real events of the 1962 war – among Bengali readers.

The books were published posthumously by the Dr. Anamika Ray Memorial Trust (ARMT) on the occasion of Dr. Ankuran Dutta’s and the Late Dr. Anamika Ray’s beloved daughter Aalphul’s (Anrini Priyambada) tenth birthday celebrations.

Professor Bhabesh Chandra Goswami, Vice-Chancellor of Cotton University, who was the program’s chief guest, expressed his gratitude for the translation of Assamese novels, which, he believes, will not only introduce Assamese great literary works to people across the country, but will also help them understand war narratives from Assam’s perspective.

“Assimilation into nature is as important for the younger generation as delving deep into war narratives,” Goswami said.

Dipak Kumar Baruah, the owner of the copyright to Kanchan Baruah’s ‘Ashimot Jar Heral Seema,’ was also present at the event.

Vice-Chairman of the Trust, Rajat Baran Mahanta, spoke about the importance of both books in the current context, and how their translation into various languages, including Bengali, will help to broaden their appeal to a wider audience.

“I urge everyone, especially the Bengali audience, to come and enjoy one of the greatest Assamese literary works of all time, as well as another war history, ‘1962,” said Dr. Ankuran Dutta, ARMT’s Managing Trustee.

ARMT is an NITI Ayog-registered educational and charitable non-profit organisation based in Guwahati that was founded in 2015.

Since its inception, the Trust has been at the forefront of the anti-medical terrorism movement in the region, working tirelessly for patients’ rights and responsibilities, with the mission of recognising the ‘Right to Health’ as one of the Indian Constitution’s Fundamental Rights.
