Following a successful New Year’s Eve, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the same rules will apply on Uruka night of Magh Bihu, with no one being allowed to drive while inebriated.
The Chief Minister told the media that the state’s police will continue their campaign against drunk driving. According to Himanta Biswa Sarma, the government has taken steps to ensure that the number of accidents during the New Year celebrations remains low, even during the Bihu celebrations.
He went on to say that, just like New Year’s Eve, people should avoid driving while inebriated, and that police will be on the lookout for this. He advised people to refrain from drinking and driving.
“We cannot prohibit anyone from drinking because liquor shops are open in the state,” he added, “but drunken driving should be prohibited.”
He went on to say that while people could celebrate, the driver of the vehicle should be sober and not drink even a drop. Those who are found breaking the rules will face severe consequences, according to the CM.
On New Year’s Day, Assam saw an almost 70% decrease in the number of accidents, with no incidents reported from Guwahati.
On New Year’s Day, the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) reportedly recorded a total of roughly 293 cases, just 39 of which were traffic accidents, compared to around 500 and more instances the previous year.
