The Assam government has announced a special grant of Rs 1.5 lakh to all Rongali Bihu Committees in the state to end the ‘donation culture’ in the state during the Rongali Bihu celebration.

However, the grant will only be given to those who have held Bihu functions within the first 7 days of the month of Bohag for at least the last ten years.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, made the announcement during a press conference in Guwahati on Monday.

CM Sarma tweeted, “In order to discourage forcible donations from the business persons, we will provide a special grant of ₹1.5 lakh to all Rongali Bihu Celebration Committees of the state who have been holding Bihu functions within first 7 days of the month of Bohag for at least past 10 years.”

CM Sarma had previously condemned the practise of Bihu committees collecting donations in order to organise the state’s Bihu function. He also stated that soliciting donations will now be considered a criminal offence in Assam.

CM Sharma also stated that the government will not impose any time limits during the Bihu celebrations; however, a specific time will be set to end the cultural programmes.

Furthermore, CM Sarma stated that the covid-19-night curfew and other covid-19 restrictions would be lifted beginning February 15.
