The Assam Police Department’s recent disclosure is shocking, as 1,326 rape cases were reported across the state in the first seven months of 2021. (from January 1 to July 31).
Sources highly placed within the law and order department said, “641 such cases were related to girl victims below 18 years while 685 cases were of women victims above 18 years of age.”
Meanwhile, a total of 18,693 rape cases were reported in Assam over the last six years, from 2016 to July 31, 2021. There were 7,607 cases involving female victims under the age of 18, with 11,086 cases involving female victims over the age of 18
“A total of 13,943 charge sheets were filed against 15,447 persons during the mentioned period. However, the number of persons against whom charge sheets were filed does not include the figures for 2021,” said the police.
According to NCRB source, “821 rape cases registered in 2016 were related to girl victims below 18 years of age. In 2017, the figure stood at 1,149 followed by 1,721 cases in 2018; 1,779 cases in 2019; 1,496 cases in 2020; and 641 rape cases in 2021 (up to July 31).”
In the year 2019, 1,015 cases under Section 376 (rape) were registered, of which 931 were solved. On the other hand, 1,100, 1,943 and 2,678 cases were registered for outraging the modesty of a woman in the years 2021, 2020 and 2019, respectively, in which 860, 1,539 and 2,277 accused were arrested.
