Manik Das, 60, of Assam’s Morigaon district, allegedly committed suicide after battling to prove his Indian citizenship at a Foreigners Tribunal, despite the fact that his name was already on the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The deceased, who is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter, ran a small business at the Jagi road dry fish market in Morigaon district.

Das’s family from Borkhal village claimed that he committed suicide as a result of the “frustration and mental torture” he endured while attending the Tribunal proceedings to prove his Indian citizenship.

According to his daughter, the case against Das, which was filed at the Tribunal in 2004, left him frustrated and imposed mental trauma, prompting him to take such drastic action.

Das, according to his daughter, had all valid legal identity documents in his name, including a PAN card, an Aadhaar card, and land records.

Das had been missing since Sunday, according to PTI, and his body was discovered hanging from a tree on a hillock near his house on Tuesday evening.

“The body has been sent for postmortem. Prima facie it’s a case of suicide but we can say it with certainty only after the postmortem,” an official told the news agency.

“It is totally wrong to link the alleged suicide with the FT case. The cause of suicide might be household issues,” – informed the Morigaon Deputy Superintendent of Police (Border) D R Bora.
