COVID is pro-BJP and anti-Assamese people: Assam Congress

On Monday, the Assam Congress launched a scathing attack on the state’s ruling BJP over the deteriorating COVID situation.

“COVID is pro-BJP and anti-Assamese people,” Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah said. “COVID is a friend of the BJP,” he added.

This statement from the Assam Congress chief comes on the same day that the state experienced its highest-ever single-day increase in COVID numbers.

On Monday, Assam recorded nearly 7000 new COVID-19 cases, with over 1400 detected in and around Guwahati.

The Assam Congress president was responding to a question about the state government’s new directive that prohibits people who have not been fully vaccinated from entering public places.

“It seems that COVID can only infect the common Assamese people but not the BJP leaders, workers nad their supporters,” Bhupen Borah said.

This new directive of the Assam government has sparked a new debate – “Is a Fundamental Right of an individual being violated by the state?”

Notably, Article 15 of the Constitution of India “prohibits discrimination on the grounds of religion, race, caste, sex, place of birth, or any of them. This right can be enforced against the State as well as private individuals, with regard to free access to places of public entertainment or places of public resort maintained partly or wholly out of State funds.”

In fact, the Centre has told the Supreme Court that no person can be forced to take jabs of COVID vaccine.
