Assam: Administration set Nov 7 and 8 for hearing on Dholpur shooting


The district administration has set November 7 and 8 as the dates for hearing on the incident, more than a month after Darrang DC Prabhati Thaosen ordered a magisterial inquiry into the deaths of two members of the minority community in police firing following a clash with security personnel at Dholpur in Assam’s Sipajhar area.

The Darrang district administration has set the dates for hearing/recording of testimony/statements by persons/organizations on the September 23 incident during an eviction drive last month at Dholpur under the Sipajhar revenue circle, which resulted in the death of two people, according to a notification issued by the DC on Thursday.

According to the notification, District Magistrate Prabhati Thaosen ordered a magisterial investigation on the day of the incident.

Eyewitnesses/interested persons have been asked to testify or record their statement on the incident in front of District Development Commissioner Subhalakshmi Deka at the Conference Hall of the Block Development Office under Sipajhar development block on November 7 and 8 between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., according to an official order issued by the District Magistrate’s office.

On September 23, clashes between police and locals in the Dholpur Gorukhuti area of Darrang district resulted in the deaths of two protesters and the injuries of many others, including police officers.

The scuffles erupted as a team of security personnel arrived in the area to evict encroachers.

The Assam government carried out a massive eviction drive in Dholpur Gorukhuti village of Darrang district, displacing over 800 families.
