A former Superintendent of Police from Assam’s Darrang district has been appointed as the new Director-General of Police (Head of Police Force) of the Punjab Police. He is the third DGP to be appointed in Punjab in the last three months.
Viresh Kumar Bhawra, an IPS officer from the 1987 batch, initially served in the Assam and Meghalaya cadre before joining the Darrang district as the 5th Superintendent of Police in 1992 after serving as an Additional Superintendent of Police in Nagaon and Jorhat.
Despite serving the district for only two months and eight days as the Superintendent of Police in Darrang from September 4 to November 11, 1992, Bhawra was able to establish himself as an honest and people-friendly senior police officer in such a short period of time.
He drew public attention for his strict vigilance against corruption. He even apprehended two Sub Inspectors of Police while they were collecting money from truck drivers on NH-52 and arrested both of them.
At the same time, he maintained a friendly relationship with the general public. However, he later transferred from Assam to Punjab. On Monday night while talking to Northeast Now over the phone, Viresh Kumar Bhawra wished the people of Darrang a very happy New Year and Bhogali Bihu in Assamese.
