Hindu Yuva Chatra Parishad, Asom (HYCPA) has demanded that the state government arrest suspended Congress MLA of Baghbar LAC Sherman Ali and evict illegal encroachers from Barpeta Xatra land. Even after making provocative statements and demolishing the erected pillar demarcating the Barpeta Xatra land, the organisation has labelled the legislator’s non-arrest as “unfortunate.”
Notably, forty bighas of land owned by Barpeta Xatra were encroached upon in Baghbor LAC, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Barpeta district. According to reports, the local administration allotted lands to “eligible landless people” who encroached on xatra land in other areas.
Recently, the administration and Barpeta Xatra collaborated to erect pillars delineating xatra land. However, the controversial Baghbor MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed recently visited the area and allegedly dismantled the erected pillars, as well as inciting the encroachers by telling them that “nobody can evict them.”
Following this, there was a widespread backlash against the MLA throughout the state. Sherman Ali, according to Central Committee president Balen Baishya and general secretary Madhab Das, had cherished Talibani attitudes through his illegal actions.
As a result of his illegal action, Assam Police should file a suo-moto case against him. However, despite the fact that the Barpeta Xatra Management Committee filed a case, the police have yet to arrest him.
Posing an impediment to Sherman Ali’s eviction drive against encroachers, provoking aggressive encroachers, and providing protection to them are all major threats to Assamese culture and the laws of the land “In a press release, Balen Baishya and Madhab Das stated that the legislator had criticised the creation and contribution of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev and Madhabdev.
