In a murder case, a sessions court in Assam’s Sonitpur district sentenced two home guards to life in jail on Wednesday. Anjan Nath and Sailen Nath were sentenced by the Tezpur Sessions Court for the crime committed in 2013.

The court also imposed a Rs 10,000 fine on each of the defendants. The home guards were found guilty of murdering a person on September 27, 2013 in the district’s Niz-Bahaguri neighbourhood.

Lumding police detained a house guard earlier in the month of October for impersonating a cop and extorting money from various businesspeople. The accused, named as Biplop Rai, is said to have been involved in multiple extortion cases in the area in recent months.

According to sources, Rai’s two other accomplices were apprehended by Lumding police on October 15, 2021.
