Assam: NF Railway starts investigation into elephant deaths in Jagiroad

Investigation

After the 12424 New Delhi – Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express mowed down two wild elephants near Jagiroad station in central Assam’s Morigaon district, the NF Railway has launched an investigation

“After the incident of last night, N.F. Railway has proactively decided to conduct a detailed inquiry of the incident and has imposed caution during train movement and reassessment of notified elephant corridors are also being taken in coordination with Forest department,” said a statement.

At around 10 p.m., the driver of the 12424 Rajdhani Express from Guwahati to Dibrugarh reported a side collision between an elephant and an engine while on the move.

“The section where the incident occurred is not a forest declared elephant corridor. No information from Forest officials or villagers on the movement of the elephant in the area was received by the nodal railway officials,” said NF Railway.

The forest department and railways have dedicated representatives from both sides at the railway’s divisional 24 hour working control office as a preventive measure, but no information regarding the movement of elephants was available, according to the report. Railway officials provided the Forest Department with information following the incident.

According to the Forest Department, elephants do not frequent the area, and there have been no recent incidents of train collisions or sightings in the area. However, because paddy is currently being grown in the area, the elephants may have arrived for crop raiding.
