The Jonbeel Mela, which is known for preserving the centuries-old barter system, has been cancelled this year due to the worsening COVID-19 situation in Assam. The mela (fair) is unique to the Tiwa people of Assam, and it takes place every year for three days.
The fair takes place over the Magh Bihu weekend in Joonbeel, Morigaon district, at a historic location known as Dayang Belguri. The jonbeel mela has been cancelled this year due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in the state.
The organisers have requested that the three-day fair be cancelled, but around 100-150 people will be allowed to participate in the barter system to keep the tradition alive. The only time the barter system is still used is at the fair.
