No possibility of Lockdown in Assam: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

Despite an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Bisawa Sarma stated on Wednesday that there is no possibility of a lockdown in the state.

“The mounting cases of Covid-19 are concerning, but there is no likelihood of lockdown in Assam,” CM Sarma remarked. We will hold a review in Guwahati tomorrow and analyse the state’s COVID-19 data from the previous week.”

He stated that a decision on the next move would be made following the meeting. Assam recorded 591 new cases on Wednesday, with 279 cases in Kamrup Metropolitan alone. In addition, four COVID-19-related deaths were reported by the state.

According to the health authorities, 591 cases out of 34,314 tests were positive, with a positivity rate of 1.72 percent. Assam also reported its first two Omicron cases on Wednesday.

The first Omicron case in Assam was discovered in Kamrup Metro’s Sonapur, when a 13-year-old kid tested positive for the virus. The second incidence of the COVID-19 Omicron variant was discovered in Assam’s Hojai.

For the last 2-3 days, Assam has been witnessing a rise in COVID cases. Notably, Assam on January 5 registered its first Omicron case after a person who returned from Saudi Arabia tested positive for the new coronavirus variant. Assam on Wednesday reported 591 fresh COVID cases.

In view of the first Omicron case and a spike in COVID-19 cases in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will chair a meeting on Thursday with state Health Minister Keshab Mahanta and other officials to decide on preventive measures to contain the spread of the pandemic.

Assam health minister confirmed that Sarma will be holding a meeting to discuss teh future course of action in view of the increase in coronavirus cases.

“We will hold a meeting with the chief minister on Thursday morning. Decisions on how to tackle the emerging situation will be taken,” Keshab Mahanta said.
