Numaligarh

Another man-elephant conflict has been reported in Assam, this time in Kanighat district, Numaligarh where two people were killed in an elephant invasion.

On Sunday night, the incident occurred in a paddy field, where the people were sleeping in a makeshift shelter. The elephant herd had entered the area in search of food in the surrounding forest.

The herd had discovered the makeshift shelter and attacked those sleeping inside. Akbar Ali and Muhammad Islamuddin were the two people who died.

While Akbar died on the spot, Islam died while undergoing treatment at the JMCH. Hojai’s Lanka was home to both of them. In the area, they were engaged in farming activities.

Six others were also injured, according to reports. Another incident was reported from Nagaon the same night. A wild elephant attacked an elderly woman in the Uriagoan area of Nonoi, injuring her.

The woman claimed the elephant smashed her room’s walls and attacked her with its trunk. However, after she made a noise, the elephant abandoned her and fled into the fields.

Assam is one state in India that has a third of its area covered in forests, or so claims the state’s forest department.
