Assam: Padma Awardee arrested for ‘raping’ adopted Minor Girl

Police in Assam have arrested a Padma awardee for allegedly raping an adopted young girl. Under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, the Assam police have filed a case against the Padma awardee (POCSO).
The victim accused her foster father of sexually harassing her for a year, according to the FIR. Meanwhile, the Gauhati High Court has granted the defendants interim release.
Based on a complaint from a chief judicial magistrate who was briefed by the district legal services authority, the Assam police have opened a case against the Padma awardee (DSLA).
However, the Gauhati High Court granted interim bail to Uddhab Bharali. Bharali was booked with rape charges by Assam Police, based on a complaint from a chief judicial magistrate who was briefed by the district legal services authority.
 
“We cannot comment on the matter as it is sub judice. However, investigation in the case is underway,” police informed.

While granting bail, justice Arun Dev Choudhury said that the alleged offence by the accused was “serious in nature”.

Meanwhile, the victim is currently lodged in a children’s home, under special police protection. A case diary on the case has been summoned by the Gauhati High Court on January 7.

According to the annual National Crime Record Bureau’s “Crime in India” 2020 report, Assam has the highest rate of crimes against women in the country for the fourth year in a row.

The rate is determined by the number of crimes reported in a population of one lakh people. The report which was on Tuesday stated that that the rate of crime against women in Assam was 154.3, which is higher than the national rate of 56.5.

As normalcy returns to Delhi following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions and the lockdown, rapes and kidnappings of women have increased, according to data shared by the Delhi Police.
