Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that in February, a portal will be launched for women in Assam who have not paid back their microfinance loans.
“The government is taking initiatives for microfinance loans,” the Chief Minister said, “and plan on paying the loans for 11-12 lakh loans initially.”
He stated that 11-12 lakh women who have been paying their loans on time will be given a loan waiver of Rs 25 thousand, while those who are unable to pay their loans will have to file an appeal through the portal.
The CM went on to say that the first 11-12 lakh people will be chosen based on their payment schedules, while the rest will have to file an appeal on the portal and meet certain criteria.
The portal will open on February 1st, and women will be required to submit their appeals directly.
The CM also asked residents of the state to directly inform him of any instances of bribery by government officials via social media.
A one-time incentive of Rs 25 thousand or the outstanding balance, whichever is less, will be given to the women. “This is an incentive for them to keep a good credit score,” the CM explained.
