Uncertainty over Assam tableau making Republic Day Parade

Republic day parade

Assam is unlikely to be able to showcase the state’s rich heritage at this year’s Republic Day parade in New Delhi because the Centre has yet to confirm the state’s tableau.

This year, the Assam government chose the tableau depicting young freedom fighter Kanaklata Barua hoisting the Tricolor and submitted it to the Centre.

However, even after chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s letter to the defence minister requesting that the teenage martyr’s bravery be recognised in the national capital, the state government is having difficulty getting an appropriate response from the Centre.

According to Assam Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Bora, the defence ministry takes the initiative to showcase glimpses of different states in the Republic Day event, and it also appealed to us to select a tableau with the theme Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

“Our state-level committee selected the scene where Kanaklata Barua was hoisting the Tricolor, as the tableau. The selection committee concerned told us to make certain corrections in the model we presented initially and we assured them that we would do that. However, there is no certainty yet whether it has been selected,” Bora said.

Despite making the corrections requested by the concerned committee in New Delhi, Bora stated that Assam will not be guaranteed a chance to present the tableau at the main event in New Delhi.

“Every state of India does not get the opportunity to showcase its proposed tableau each year. It’s not mandatory that every state must be present there,” he clarified.

According to state government sources, if the Assam tableau does not make the cut for the event, the committee in charge may not even notify the state government.

Assam PCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah slammed the state government, calling it a “insult to Assam and the Northeast.”

“Kanaklata Barua was a great freedom fighter and valiant leader at such a tender age. Perhaps, her case was not approved by the RSS and thus, we are most likely to miss her in the national capital,” he said.
