Sachin Tendulkar stepped up to help youngsters in Northeast

Sachin Tendulkar, the legendary cricketer, has stepped up to help youngsters in the Northeast. The cricketer has donated a retinal camera to the Makunda Christian Leprosy and General Hospital in south Assam’s Karimganj district’s paediatric intensive care section and neonatal intensive care unit. Patients from the neighbouring states of Tripura and Mizoram seek treatment here as well.

Sachin Tendulkar organisation has volunteered to donate retinal cameras to help diagnose retinopathy of prematurity,’ a preventable ailment that can cause blindness in pre-term neonates (newborns).

This will help the NICU’s almost 45 per cent pre-term births and 50 per cent pre-term hospitalizations. Currently, the closest ROP screening centre is in Guwahati, which is around 360 kilometres away and requires an overnight journey from Karimganj.

Dr. Shajin MD, Makunda Hospital’s Consultant Pediatrician, commended Tendulkar for his inspiring act. “We are thankful to the Sachin Tendulkar foundation for coming to our rescue in getting this device which will go a long way in helping a lot of premature babies, getting treated in our hospital from the rural communities,” Shajin said.

While thanking Sachin Tendulkar foundation, Dr. Shajin, MD and consultant pediatrician at Makunda Hospital, said many babies fail to get ROP screening done, as many do not have the wherewithal to travel all the way to Guwahati.
